Abstract
Journey of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) begins with classical “Pentad of PHPT” as described by Fuller Albright and reaches a state of asymptomatic PHPT in North America. However, it is still very symptomatic in Asian and African countries and continued to present with “Pentad of PHPT”. Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is a common endocrine disorder which is most commonly caused by parathyroid adenoma, followed by parathyroid hyperplasia and parathyroid carcinoma. Primary hyperparathyroidism has varied presentation and is a truly systemic disease which involves multiple organ systems. Patients of primary hyperparathyroidism can present to one or multiple medical and surgical specialties viz urology, orthopedics, gastroenterology, hematology, nephrology, neurology, oncology, emergency medicine, endocrinology and many more. This book is an effort to provide an overview of primary hyperparathyroidism ranging from clinical presentation to molecular pathogenesis. Majority of literature on primary hyperparathyroidism revolves around asymptomatic presentation but here we included presentation of PHPT across the continent or globe. This book has 10 chapters on PHPT which included varied clinical presentation of PHPT, congenital PHPT, pediatric and adolescent PHPT, and PHPT in pregnancy, parathyroid carcinoma, preop localization of culprit parathyroid gland in PHPT, heritable forms of PHPT, and association of PHPT with pituitary tumors and management issues, approach to recurrent and persistent PHPT and molecular pathogenesis of symptomatic PHPT. All these chapters are contributed by stalwarts from the field of PHPT and metabolic bone disorders. These stalwarts are from all continents of globe namely, Europe, North America, Canada and Asia. This book comprehensively covered all aspects of PHPT from clinical presentation to long-term follow-up. The purpose of this book is to provide recent advances in the field of PHPT for students, physicians, endocrinologists, surgeons as well as for basic scientists.
