Abstract

Coronaviruses are enveloped viruses with a positive-sense single-stranded RNA genome with spikelike proteins projecting from the surface of the virus, hence the name of the virus. Most coronaviruses that affect humans typically cause self-limited mild symptoms. These viruses have the capacity to jump between species triggering emergence of new viruses such as the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) coronavirus and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS-CoV-1 and SARS-CoV-2) (Umakanthan S et al., Postgrad Med J 96:753–8, 2020). The latter is the infectious agent responsible for coronavirus disease 2019 or COVID-19. This clinical syndrome is thought to have emerged in December 2019 in Wuhan, China. Within months, it spread around the world, becoming a pandemic and leading to one of the biggest health and economic challenges humanity has faced in the last century. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), by mid-2024, over 760 million cases and 6.9 million deaths have been recorded worldwide since its discovery, although the actual number is thought to be higher. Over 13 billion vaccines have been administered as of June 2023.
