Abstract
The article focuses on the impact of exercise modality and prescription method on exercise intensity in cardiac rehabilitation (CR). A randomized trial assessed how different exercise modes (treadmill, upright bike, recumbent bike, and seated dual-action elliptical/stepper) and methods (ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) vs. target heart rate (THR)) influenced exercise heart rate (HR). Results indicated that patients using THR achieved higher exercise intensity across most modalities, while seated modalities, particularly the seated dual-action elliptical/stepper, resulted in the lowest intensity, especially in the RPE group. The findings emphasize the importance of using THR to guide exercise in CR for better fitness outcomes.
