Abstract
Key points:
- Patients with dermatologic conditions often have concurrent mental health disorders; however, medical training in the comprehensive care of patients with dermatopsychiatric conditions is lacking.
- Obtaining a complete medical history, performing a thorough preliminary workup examination, and identifying all underlying conditions are critical when treating patients with dermatopsychiatric disorders.
- Psychotherapy is helpful for treating patients with dermatopsychiatric conditions, especially body-focused repetitive disorders. Although no Food and Drug Administration-approved medications are available for treating dermatopsychiatric disorders, many existing psychotropic agents may help patients with these conditions.
- Rapport building is key to the successful treatment of patients with dermatopsychiatric disorders because these conditions are complex and require care from specialists in different fields.
