Abstract

Introduction: Hepatitis C is a prevalent and often devastating disease that can lead to significant complications including liver failure, cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and death. In collaboration with expert groups throughout the state, we aimed to create an educational initiative to train residents on identification, management, and prescription of Hepatitis C therapy. Methods: As a part of the Hepatitis C Clinical Collaborative, we worked with 9 other Michigan hospital systems and the Michigan Consortium for Educational Research (MCER) to create an educational curriculum on Hepatitis C treatment for residents throughout the state. We compiled a comprehensive list of Internal Medicine and Family Medicine residency programs in the state of Michigan with identification of key personnel in order to contact each program to offer the educational initiative. Results: An initial educational curriculum was created and offered to gauge resident interest in each program in obtaining Hepatitis C education and to understand how training will impact new prescriber activity for hepatitis C therapy. In collaboration with MCER, we distributed information to all programs on our list with options for both virtual and in-person training. Lectures are led by expert groups throughout the state with key content including Hepatitis C screening guidelines, identifying high risk individuals, hepatitis C treatment (workup, labs to be ordered, management), hepatitis C elimination plan, and insurance coverage for therapy. Faculty are drawn from gastroenterology and hepatology programs with expertise in treatment of hepatitis C and chronic liver disease management. Conclusion: Our goal is to improve resident confidence and expertise in approaching Hepatitis C in order to help reduce population disease burden. We initiated an open and interactive platform for trainees to ask questions and voice ideas or concerns regarding key topics from experts in the state. Ongoing education will be expanded to medical schools and other residency programs such as Obstetrics, Emergency Medicine, and Pediatrics with information targeted to their respective patient populations.
