Abstract
Introduction: A 2013 review in Injury supports mental health concerns are a common sequela of a traumatic injury. Upward of 93% of survivors met criteria for PTSD. In a report published in 2019 by the Michigan Health Endowment Fund, 49% of Medicaid enrollees are untreated for mental illness and 42% are not receiving any care in Metro Detroit. As a designated Health Professional Shortage Area for mental health services, even with adequate insurance coverage, patients face long waitlists and often turn to local emergency departments, placing further strain on an already burdened system. Methods: The Trauma Recovery Center will provide evidencebased, trauma-informed psychological interventions. The model utilizes a multidisciplinary team approach that includes assertive outreach, clinical case management, and up to 16 psychotherapy visits. A clinician will complete an intake upon referral, including the assessments listed in Figure 1. Reassessment will occur at the 8th session to monitor progress. Following data collection and cleaning, inferential statistics will be utilized to analyze outcomes. Results: Following establishment of the TRC, a reduction in psychological distress, decreased LOS, ED utilization, readmission, cost to the health system, and increased adherence to follow-up visits are anticipated. Conclusion: The TRC model would greatly improve the lives of traumatically injured patients. In TRC published data, ED utilization dropped by 50%, downstream costs decreased, and adherence to follow up increased. The TRC will provide necessary services to traumatically injured patients and their families and promote the healing not just of survivors, but the community at large (Figure Presented).
