Abstract

Rationale: Weather elements can influence the development of atopic dermatitis (AD) and wheezing. We tested whether daily outdoor temperature and humidity associated with transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and allergic diseases during infancy. Methods: Participants were recruited from four centers (Madison, Detroit, St. Louis, Nashville) with distinct climates in the Childhood Allergies and NeOnatal Environment (CANOE) birth cohort. Birth addresses were geocoded to obtain daily outdoor temperature and humidity measurements during the first year of life. We tested whether average daily temperature and humidity over the first 6 months of life were associated with TEWL, AD, rhinitis and wheezing at age 1. Results: Increases in 1°C of mean temperature for the first 1 and 3 months were associated with a decreased risk of AD [n=287, OR (95% CI)=0.97 (0.94, 0.99), p=0.02; 0.95 (0.93, 0.98), p<0.01 respectively]. An increase in 1g/m3 of absolute humidity was associated with lower risk of AD during the first 1 ,3 and 6 months [n=287, OR (95% CI)=0.94 (0.89, 0.99), p=0.02; 0.91 (0.85, 0.97), p<0.01; OR (95% CI)=0.90 (0.82, 0.97), p<0.01 respectively] and wheezing during the first 1 and 3 months [n=212, OR (95% CI)=0.93 (0.87, 0.99), p=0.03; 0.92 (0.85, 0.99), p=0.03 respectively]. Temperature and humidity were not associated with TEWL [n=300, TEWL (95% CI)=-0.15 (-0.08, 0.00), p=0.05; -0.16 (-0.33, 0.02), p=0.08 respectively] or chronic rhinitis [n=269, OR (95% CI)=1.01 (0.99, 1.04), p=0.39; 1.02 (0,97 , 1.08), p=0.45 respectively]. Conclusions: Lower outdoor temperature and humidity were associated with increased risk of AD and/or wheezing during infancy in a prospective birth cohort.
