Abstract
This article provides an overview of cholesterol, its types, and the pathophysiology of elevated lipoproteins, emphasizing their role in cardiovascular disease risk. It explains that cholesterol is transported in the blood by lipoproteins—high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), and triglycerides (TGs)—with elevated LDL, VLDL, and TGs linked to increased cardiovascular risk. The article highlights the beneficial effects of consistent aerobic exercise, especially when combined with a plant-based diet and weight loss, on improving blood lipoprotein profiles, notably increasing HDL and lowering triglycerides. It also outlines exercise testing and individualized exercise recommendations for people with dyslipidemia, advocating a combination of aerobic and resistance training tailored to individual health status and comorbidities.
