Abstract
Background: Black/African Americans (AA) were nearly twice as likely to test positive for COVID-19 compared to Whites. Consequently, they also experienced the highest COVID-19 mortality rate. Culturally sensitive interventions can address these disparities by building trust, reducing inequities, and improving health outcomes. Therefore, this study aimed to obtain community feedback to inform the content and delivery of a culturally sensitive intervention to increase COVID-19 antibody testing. The study used a CBPR orientation to collaborate with community partners while applying the PRISM/RE-AIM frameworks, in which it is essential to identify and assess multilevel cultural and contextual factors through the planning, implementation, and evaluation stages of an intervention. Methods: A descriptive qualitative design was used. Data collected through one virtual focus group interview with n = 8 participants from Black/AA communities in Flint, Michigan. Participants were asked to provide detailed feedback on their thoughts, feelings and perceptions of the video intervention materials. The session was video recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed inductively using the framework method. Results: Three preliminary themes have developed: 1) intervention content needs to be delivered by a trusted member of the Black/AA community, 2) intervention content needs to be co-developed with Black/AA community members to avoid unintentional harm, 3) culturally sensitive interventions need to acknowledge systemic injustices without placing burdens onto Black/AA. Conclusions: Community insights underscored the need for trust, collaboration, and acknowledgment of systemic inequities in developing culturally sensitive COVID-19 interventions. These findings will guide refinement of interventions to promote COVID-19 antibody testing, enhance vaccine confidence, and advance health equity among Black/AA.
